Women's Hockey Sweeps Springfield
Springfield, MA ~ The Paul Smith's College women's hockey team took an important two games from Springfield College over the weekend. In a matchup of Adirondack Western Division opponents in the Independent Women's Club Hockey League (IWCHL), the Bobcats overpowered the Pride and vaulted into second place in their division.
Saturday's game was the closer of the two, with the Bobcats winning by a score of 3-1. Kaleigh Koss (Sweet Valley, PA) scored the first two goals for the visitors, and Leah Coulombe (Champlain, NY) added another one for insurance. Rhoda Peterson (Havre, MT) picked up two assists on the day, while Coulombe and Leola Brown (Brooklyn, NY) added solo helpers. Freshman goaltender Lola De Toni (Ottawa, ON) backstopped the win with 14 saves. Koss received player of the game for her two-goal effort.
On Sunday, the Bobcats dominated from start to finish, cruising to a 6-1 win. Peterson got things started for Paul Smith's College, with assists going to Brown and Coulombe. Coulombe would then net an unassisted goal on a nice individual effort. Rounding out the scoring were Abigail Hartley (South Hadley, MA), Charlotte Kline (Worthington, OH), Alli Cherry (Grasonville, MD), and Coulombe. Coulombe and Cherry also picked up assists on the day. Lola De Toni got her second win of the weekend and finished with 12 saves. Cherry was named player of the game, as her goal came on a bullet from the point that the goaltender didn't even see.
"After a long break and one practice in, I feel the girls did a tremendous job - especially the second game," said Jazmine Miley, Paul Smith's College women's hockey head coach.
The sweep all but secures an IWCHL Final Four appearance for Paul Smith's College on February 18th and 19th at Merrimack College. They currently sit at 11 points in the Adirondack West Division, 3 points clear of both Westfield State and Springfield, with only two games left to play. If they beat Smith this upcoming Saturday, February 4th at 7:30pm at the Tupper Lake Civic Center, they will secure their spot in North Andover.
