Men's Soccer Team Honors its Seniors with Win on Senior Day
Lake Placid, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College men's soccer team honored its seniors on Saturday with a win over Vermont State University at Randolph and punched their ticket to the playoffs in the process.
Seniors Dalton Tenorio (Crestview, FL), Tyler Vogle, (Fort Plain, NY), Treyantae Leak (Troy, NY), Derek Burns (Bloomville, NY), Pete Grayson (Sugar Hill, GA), Jakob Anderson (Deposit, NY), Michael Stiber (Hobart, NY) and team manager Bailie Charette were honored before the game in a Senior Day ceremony with family, friends, and fans cheering in support.
The Bobcats came out at a torrid pace to start the game, scoring four times to go up 4-0 in the first half. Treyantae Leak got things started as he split defenders on a precision run through the corner of the 18 after a nice pass by Derek Burns. Burns would then score one himself in the 17th minute as Cody Hanson (Fonda, NY) would pick up his first of two assists in the match to put the Bobcats up 2-0. Sophomore striker Nick Grover (Batavia, NY) tucked his first of three goals past the Knights goalkeeper just 30 seconds later after a perfectly placed through ball by Hanson. Grover would notch his second of the match in the 22nd minute after Dalton Tenorio delivered a long-pass-of-the-year candidate to the far side of the box to put PSC on top 4-0 going into the half.
Jake Lewis (Niskayuna, NY) made it 5-0 in the 48th minute before VSU Randolph would get two back in quick succession. Chase Wyrick (West Hartford, CT) scored his first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute before Grover finished the scoring six minutes later to seal the 7-2 victory. Adam Holt (Spencerport, NY), Lewis, and Grover added solo assists and Lucas Darling (Groton, NY) earned the win in net for the Bobcats as the move to 4-5-2 on the season.
Head Coach Zack Luzzi reflected on the season and what it has meant for the seniors. "This season has had its ups and downs; we are incredibly proud of our seniors not just this season but from the last four years. These guys have single handedly changed this program," he stated. The program has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, and the group that was honored on Saturday is a big reason for that rejuvenation.
Luzzi continued, "In the 2019-2020 season we were 2-11-2 , Then were hit with COVID in fall of '20 and used that time to rebuild the entire program. Since the '19-'20 season our record is 17-15-6, and while numerically this isn't impressive, it is filled with All Conference, All American, Player of the Year, GK of the Year, and many other performances that wouldn't have been possible prior. These guys have laid the foundation for our future teams and we are excited to see what they do next."
The men's soccer team head to Concord, NH on Sunday to compete against NHTI in the YSCC #4 vs. #5 play-in game at 1pm. If they win, they'll head to Southern Maine CC next weekend to compete for the YSCC championship at the YSCC Final Four in South Portland, ME.
