Bobcats Athletics March on with Busy Weekend
Paul Smiths N.Y.- In the midst of a global pandemic the Bobcats of Paul Smith’s College have found safe ways to compete! This weekend the Bobcat’s Bass Fishing Team, Golf Team are both in action and the Cross Country team is training hard for the remainder of their schedule.
Bass Fishing, led by Coach Bob Visicaro, will be heading to their second tournament of the season, this time on Lake Champlin. After a successful State qualifying tournament for New York’s branch of The Bass Federation on Lake George, where Juniors Gabe Smith and Ben Slayton lead the pack with a first place finish and the other four boats followed placing 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th, the team hope to carry the momentum into winning the title for the second time.
After an exciting off season where Head Coach Rod Bushy brought in a strong freshman class to add to his defending championship squad, the PSC golf team will hit the links this Saturday to compete against neighboring Clarkson University & SUNY Canton. The meet will be hosted at the Saranac Inn Golf and Country Club. The following day the golf team will be playing in a collegiate tournament at St. Lawrence University.
Although not competing this weekend, the Paul Smith’s College Cross Country Team is taking advantage of the free weekend to do long distance point to point trail run, using the abandoned railroad grades, the Jackrabbit Ski Trail and the 13,000 acres of Paul Smith’s College lands in the students’ backyard. This Saturday, the team will be running 13.1 miles ~ a half marathon with the start at the entrance to the college and concluding at the four-corners in Bloomingdale. This follows the original route of the Lake Placid Marathon from the 1970’s.
“It is memorable to conclude a long distance run with food,” Athletic Director and Head Cross Country Coach Jim Tucker added, “so these weekend trail runs have ended at Charlie’s Inn and the 1892 Bar and Grille both in Lake Clear, Donnelly’s Ice Cream and most recently concluded at Desperado’s in Lake Placid.”
There are very few college cross country teams allowed to compete in their chosen sport in the Northeastern US, but Paul Smith’s College was able to maintain a relationship with Vermont Tech. The Paul Smith’s College men’s and women’s teams both won over Vermont Tech a couple weeks ago. It is expected that PSC will return to Randolph, VT on October 10th, and then Vermont Tech will come to the Paul Smith’s College VIC on October 24th to conclude the fall season.
The remainder of the PSC teams are waiting patiently for a safe environment for competition with Basketball and Hockey likely starting in January.
