Bio
In his freshman year (2005), the team was competing in the USCAA, and he competed in USCAA Nationals in Buena Vista, Virginia. He competed on snowshoes while earning his BS in Hotel, Resort, and Tourism Management in the United States, Canada and in Italy.
Phil ran cross country for his four seasons at Paul Smith's College on the 2005 - 2008 teams, and earned Sunrise Conference All Conference honors from 2006 - 2008, while the team won the conference championship each season. At season's end, Phil and the cross country team headed to Ohio (2006 - 2007) and Nashville, TN (2008) to determine which teams and individual athletes earn the honor of competing in the NAIA Cross Country Nationals. By virtue of his 9th place finish, he earned a trip to nationals in Wisconsin ~ the first Paul Smith's College runner to earn this honor.
Phil has run a couple marathons and half marathons, and competed for the Marathon Canoe Team as well as the Paul Smith's College Nordic Ski Team while attending the college. Phil has competed in the 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic twice, and competed in USCSA Nordic Ski Nationals in Devil's Thumb, Colorado as a college senior.
Although PSC didn't field a bowling team during Phil's attendance, he began bowling while growing up in Shelburne, Vermont and began bowling in Saranac Lake in 2006. He maintains a 200 game average, and represents Romano's Saranac Lanes in the Travel League against other communities in the region. He bowled his first perfect 300 game in 2012, and has a 756 triple to his credit.
Phil was a standout bowling coach, getting the intercollegiate program started in 2012 and running until 2019. The Paul Smith's College team won 7 Yankee Small College Conference titles over the nine years of the program, before the conference ended this sport within the conference. The pandemic hit the nation in 2020, and this event really took the sails out of collegiate bowling regionally, but the bowlers at Paul Smith's have fond memories of bowling for the Bobcats under Phil's leadership. The bowling team won YSCC titles in 2012, 2014; and 2015 - 2019, with the only loss being the fateful 2013 season.
Phil has been a stalwart assistant with the cross country teams since 2009, and the runners appreciate his support and guidance through their cross country experience and beyond. Since the demise of the collegiate bowling program and with the growth of the snowshoe team, Phil has been coaching the snowshoe team through regional, national and international competitions. His organizational skills and support of the athletes is sincerely appreciated by the athletes and his fellow staff.
In his spare time, he enjoys tossing around the frisbee, running and hanging out with friends. I look forward to teaching newcomers to bowling and to help develop student bowling skills.
Phil stated, "I try to find humor in most situations and make others find humor in themselves."
