Men's Cross Country dominates YSCC Championship
Men's Cross Country wins YSCC championship for the fourth time in school history!
The Paul Smith's College Men's Cross Country Team won the Yankee Small College Championship on Saturday at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, with a total of four of our runners earning All-Conference honors.
Captain Matt Frye (JR: Niagara Wheatfield HS/ Niagara Falls, NY) paced the PSC Bobcats with a fourth place finish in a time of 31:19. Jack Fogarty (FR: Moultonborough Academy/ Moultonborough NH) placed sixth in 32:05, followed soon after by Patrick Mullen Mechtly (JR: Red Hook HS/Red Hook, NY) in 7th with a time of 32:07. Paul Smith's had five finishers among the top ten, to win going away with 36 points. Co-captain Isaac Leach finished in 9th at 32:32, with Dylan Thompson (FR: Arlington HS/Hudson, NY) finishing in 32:37.
Senior captain, Tessa White (Medina HS/Medina, NY) paced the incomplete women's team with a fourth place finish in 27:57 to also earn All-Conference honors. Fellow runners Kelly Bosloper finished ninth in 31:19, and Julie Capito placed 26th in 40:19.
The Paul Smith's College runners have been competing in races through Vermont and New York against much larger schools as they prepared for this championship race. The men's team has no seniors and has been working hard together as a unit and improving from week to week. The top eight runners on the men's team are all interchangeable, with different leaders each week, and yet strong performances among the top five.
The team will be hosting the 25th annual Pumpkin McMuffin 5K Fun Run on Saturday 27 October, starting at 11 AM. Registration can be done on race day in the Saunders Gymnasium lobby, and many of the participants will be running in season costumes.
This provides some relief from the stress of collegiate racing each week, as the team prepares for USCAA Cross Country Nationals in Virginia Beach on November 9th. The Paul Smith's College runners will face some top end collegiate runners on this incredibly flat course just above sea-level.
