Men’s Rugby Drops Final Game of Season to Clarkson
Gabriels, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College Men's Rugby Team concluded its season at the Brighton Field on Saturday as they dropped their final game of the campaign to Clarkson University by a score of 64-33.
The Bobcats have improved markedly over the past couple months, using games against regional opponents to get back into playing regular Rugby 15s games, something that has been absent on the rugby pitch for a number of years. And while Clarkson jumped out to an early lead and would eventually win, it was valuable experience gained from such a young group.
The team played with intensity throughout the entire game on Saturday, and even when the outcome was a foregone conclusion late in the game they continued to battle to the very end, scoring the most points in a single game all season with 33. Gianni Santonastaso got things started, adding to his team lead for trys on the season. Griffen Johnson (one try), Michael Lachance (two trys), and Henry Mossell (one try) would round out the scoring in the end zone while Johnson would add 4/5 conversion kicks.
First year player Liam Carroll was voted Man of the Match by his fellow teammates, demonstrating a toughness in the scrum with his physical brand of play.
The team will look to build upon what can be considered a successful season, especially regarding the aforementioned improvement and re-emergence in the world of collegiate Rugby 15s.
