Bobcats Sweep Vikings in Straight Sets
Paul Smiths, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College women's volleyball team dominated their opening game of the season on Saturday against the visitors from Hudson Valley Community College.
The Bobcats had some resistance from the Vikings in the first set but settled into the game after some important points from their core players. Sets went 25-17, 25-6, 25-16 with the stat categories heavily favoring Paul Smith's College. Jordan Louis (Navajo, NM) led the way with 8 kills followed by newcomer Madeleine Rhodes (Charlotte, NC) with 7, Alexandra Cherry (Grasonville, MD with 6, Molly McClenon (Walton, NY) with 4, and Alison Russell (Old Forge, NY) with 2. Senior captain Shannon McPheeters (Springfield, VA) and set specialist Avrielle "V" Fletcher (Ovid, NY) both led the way with an impressive 5 service aces each while Fletcher added a whopping 18 set assists.
It was more of the same on the defensive side of the court as the Bobcats controlled play. Rhodes and Louis had 11 and 10 digs, respectively, while Cherry (8 digs), Russell (4 digs), Fletcher (4 digs), McClennon (2 digs), and McPheeters (1 dig) contributed to the total of 40 throughout the match. When asked about the game, Head Coach Bridget McCormick looked at what the future may bring for this talented squad. "Our team is starting this season off strong with our sights set on Nationals. We will continue playing our best no matter the outcome and look forward to showing what we can do as we grow together as a team."
The Bobcats head to SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday, September 3rd to take on NCAA Division III SUNY Potsdam. Tip off is at 7pm at Maxcy Hall.
