Severing and Coulombe Each Score Twice in Win Against UMA
Paul Smiths, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College women's soccer team let an early one in on Saturday, but that mental lapse proved to be the motivation they needed to put a six-spot up against the visitors from the University of Maine at Augusta. In front of a healthy crowd, multiple members of the team contributed goals and assists, as the Bobcats gained their first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) win of the season.
After conceding the early goal at just the 2nd minute, Samantha Severing (Livingston Manor, NY) got things started with an easy tap-in from a nice individual drive by freshman midfielder Alana Cunningham (Norfolk, VA). Severing would notch her 2nd of the game and eventual game winner when Cunningham found her around the penalty area after a nice set-piece corner from Grace Kronick (Cheshire, MA). Leah Coulombe (Champlain, NY) and Katrien Roefs (Bainbridge, NY) would add the third and fourth goals as the Bobcats cruised to halftime up 4-1, with Cunningham picking up her third assist of the half on Roefs' goal.
"Samantha Severing had a phenomonal effort scoring two goals and showing a lot of energy in a new position," said Paul Smith's College women's soccer coach Bailey Walton. "UMA had an impressive showing for being a new team this year," she continued, "But we're looking forward to a double-header conference weekend at NHTI and Hampshire."
The second half saw the Bobcats add two more goals, as last year's YSCC Player of the Year Hayleigh Gates (West Winfield, NY) got on the stats sheet with a beautiful give-and-go with Samantha Severing. The final goal came with just 10 minutes left in the game as Leah Coulombe tucked a well-placed shot just inside the post to make it a 6-1 final. Keeley VanValKenburgh (Gilboa, NY) and Rhoda Peterson (Havre, MT) added solo helpers in the victory, and freshman goaltener Peyton Hoffman (Ilion, NY) earned the win in net.
"I love that every game anyone on our team is capable of scoring or creating opportunities," added Walton. "I truly feel that way. We continue to work on attacking and defending with 11."
The Bobcats remain undefeated in the early season and stretch their regular season undefeated streak to an amazing 23 games. They haven't lost a regular season game since 2020.
