Storrs, CT ~ The Paul Smiths College woodsmen's team sent three pairs of athletes to Storrs, CT to compete in the annual Jack & Jill meet hosted by University of Connecticut on Saturday, March 4th. This unique meet invites teams of one male and one female to compete in a variety of classic woodsmen events.
Representing Paul Smiths College were
Curtis Betty (Bath, NY) and
Hannah Aldrich (Cortland, NY),
Daniel Miner (Hopkinton, NH) and
Allie Howald (Newport, NH), and
Matthew Bliss (Centreville, NY) and
Sydney Krompasky (Hamlin, PA). Everyone saw success in their events, but it was Miner and Howald who were the standout pair of the competition, earning first place in several disciplines and first place overall Jack & Jill team with 803 total points. Bliss and Krompasky finished in second place with 747 points, while Betty and Aldrich finished in a close fifth place with 636 points. The point spread between third, fourth, and fifth place was just 15 points.
The disciplines included individual and team events. The pairs worked together in the log roll, pulp toss, crosscut sawing, standing block chop, and underhand chop. The pairs then divided up the remaining individual events: bowsaw, single buck, axe throw and disc stack.
Typical collegiate competitions are based on six-person teams in four different divisions: Women's, Men's, Jack & Jill, and Open. This weekend's competition was unique with only two people competing across all disciplines.
Keith Braun, PSC's Head Coach commented, "Hannah, Curtis, Sydney, Matt, Danny, and Allie showed the competition the true spirit of the PSC Woodsmen's Team on Saturday. They showed up ready to compete in all of their events, and the results reflect that. Congratulations should go to all three teams for their performances and dedication to their sport."
