PSC Women's Hockey Blank Mount Holyoke in First Ever Game
The Paul Smith's College Women's Hockey Team started their first ever game in spectacular fashion on Saturday night, scoring 11 seconds into the opening frame. Samantha Marson (Cambridge, ON) collected a pass from Caitlin Fortin (Highgate, VT) and buried the first ever goal for the PSC Women's Hockey Team into the back of the net as a crowd of 200+ cheered on from the stands of the Saranac Lake Civic Center. Many goals followed as the Bobcats dominated play against an obviously outmatched Mount Holyoke squad.
Caitlin Fortin (#17), Charlotte Kline (#11), Sam Peters (#4), and Sam Marson (#19) celebrate after scoring the first ever goal for the Paul Smith's College Women's Hockey Team.
The first period of the first ever game for the women's hockey team saw 8 goals from the home bench. Molly Graham (Sydney, Australia) connected for the second goal of the game, with an assist coming from Samantha Peters (Northfield, OH). The Bobcats then took advantage of their first ever Power Play as Charlotte Kline (Worthington, OH) sniped a shot from above the circles. Assists on the play went to Anna Thrasher (Leonia, NJ) and Allie Chamberlain (Tupper Lake, NY). McKenna Yette (Potsdam, NY) then notched her first goal of the season on the Power Play 1 ½ minutes later, slamming home a play setup by Chamberlain and Graham. Molly Graham scored her second of the night just 51 seconds later and put the Bobcats up 5-0. Samantha Peters, Allie Chamberlain, and Charlotte Kline each scored again before the end of the first period. Going into the first intermission the Bobcats led 8-0 and the game was all but decided.
The second frame continued the trend of Bobcats goals, as Molly Graham became the first ever member of the Paul Smith's College Women's Hockey Team to record a hat trick. After controlling the puck in the offensive zone, Charlotte Kline found Graham streaking to the net, where the ever-dangerous Australian beat the goaltender high glove side for her third goal of the game. It was then Graham's turn to return the favor, as Charlotte Kline collected her hat trick less than 3 minutes later. Also assisting on the goal was Lauren Mullen (Concord, NH). In what may be a first for college hockey, a third Bobcat collected a hat trick in the same period as Allie Chamberlain blasted a slap shot from the point into the back of the Mount Holyoke net, with a nice setup coming from Kate MacDevitt (Essex, NY). Before the end of the second frame Marson had collected her second goal of the night while Graham added her fourth.
Samantha Marson opened the final period by scoring her third goal of the night and adding to an impressive 4-Bobcat-hat-trick performance. Graham then scored her fifth goal of the night assisted by Kline and Peters. The final goal came with just 20 seconds left in the game as Lauren Mullen scored her first ever goal in a Bobcats uniform. Caitlin Fortin collected a game leading fourth assist on the final goal while Samantha Peters tallied her third assist.
It was an impressive win for the first ever game of the inaugural season of women's varsity hockey at Paul Smith's College. Along with the four hat tricks, eight players finished with multiple points - Lauren Mullen (1G, 1A), McKenna Yette (1G, 1A), Sam Peters (1 G, 3A), Sam Marson (3G), Allie Chamberlain (3G, 3A), Caitlin Fortin (4A), Charlotte Kline (3G, 3A), and Molly Graham (5G, 4A). Graham finished with a team high nine points and showcased her international pedigree with stunning technique and skill.
The Paul Smith's College Women's Hockey Team plays again next weekend, November 2nd (away in Schenectady at 5:15pm) and 3rd (home in Lake Placid at 1:45pm) with a home and home series against Union.
