Race Summary: Thirteen members of the Paul Smith's College Snowshoe Team took part in the 2022 US Snowshoe Nationals in Cable, Wisconsin on March 13th conducted by the American Trail Running Association. Fifteen states were represented, while the Paul Smith's contingent comprised the total of the New York State snowshoe runners.
Zack Sprott-Scribner paced the Bobcats with a 6th place finish overall in the Championship 10K race over a course dominated by rolling hills in a time of 44:05 to win the 20 – 29 age category for the men. Zack's 6th place finish was one place from earning a spot on the US National Team, as the top 5 Men and Women earned this honor. This was the closest any Paul Smith's College athlete has come to earning a spot on the men's open category to the US National Team in 22 years.
Erik Hartmark of Duluth, MN won the National championship in 37:57 marking his 7th US National title, while Jackie Hering won the women's national title in 41:50. Cole Crosby placed second for the men in 39:44, while Jeffrey Quednow placed third in 40:41. 2020 National Champion, Michelle Hummel placed second for the women in 42:24, followed by Amber Tookey in 44:18.
Ellen Haas paced the Bobcat women, in winning the U – 20 division in 59:38, while placing 15th overall for the women. Samantha Severing and Ellie Judice placed second and third in the U – 20 in 1:11:03 and 1:13:23 respectively.
Carson Wohlers and Nathan Shader placed second and third respectively in the men's U – 20 category in times of 52:57 and 56:10 respectively to earn their respective spots on the age group podium.
The 5K event was not the championship event, but attracted 20 finishers. PSC student, Matt Leichty placed third overall in 28:47, followed by Anna Thrasher in 39:14, and Havan Bradt in 42:04.
Due to the COVID pandemic, there was no championship event held in 2021, and subsequently the host city, Eau Claire, Wisconsin declined to host the event due to the Omicron outbreak with an announcement in early November. Fortunately, Cable, WI stepped forward to become the only venue to host US Snowshoe Nationals a third time. Lakewoods Resort did an outstanding job of marking the course and grooming the extremely hilly terrain for the runners.
