Race Summary: A dozen members of the Paul Smith's College Snowshoe Team headed to the NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston, Vermont on Saturday February 19th to take part in the first Wild and Woolly 5 and 10K snowshoe races.
Sam Finger and Zack Sprott -Scribner paced the field through the initial 5K and continued to lead the way over the 10K race in 53:08 and 53:017 respectively. Both are US Collegiate Snowshoe All Americans from 2020 with their respective top five finishes in Leadville, CO.
Connor Flynn won the men's 5K in 28:19, followed by Alex Cameron in 28:54 and Nathan Shader in 34:04. Zack Bobbie rounded out the Paul Smith's men's 5K finishers with a 39:16 to finish 5th for the men.
Ellen Haas has won three consecutive 5K races and seems to have adjusted to snowshoe racing. Haas won the Wild and Woolly 5K in 33:25, her best time to date. The Paul Smith's women took the top five spots, with Samantha Severing taking second in 39:31, followed by Haven Bradt in 41:23. Ellie Judice and Anna Thrasher paced one another to fourth and fifth with times of 50:10 and 50:13. Leah Hale finished 7th in 59:18.
Nineteen snowshoe racers took part in the Wild and Woolly races held on wonderful groomed frozen granular conditions and a series of on-going snow squalls. The hilly course went through a good range of mixed forests in Vermont's North East Kingdom.
The team is looking forward to the Adirondack Snowshoe Festival next weekend with 5K and 10K snowshoe races at Dewey Mountain on Saturday followed by a 5K and 15K snowshoe races at the Paul Smith's College VIC on Sunday. The Adirondack Snowshoe Festival will be the final tune-up prior to US Nationals in Cable, WI.
