Paul Smith's College hosted the Empire State Games snowshoe events with thirty athletes taking part. Since 1988, Paul Smith's has either hosted and/or conducted the Empire State Games over 20 years, with the races also conducted at various locations in Lake Placid over the years.
The Empire State Games features four race distances in six age group categories, but our collegiate runners are battling in the 15 – 19 and 20 – 34 age group categories. The athletes themselves can select which distances they feel would be the best chance for excellence, and some compete in all four races.
Paul Smith's College had eleven students take part in the Empire State Games snowshoe races this year, and accumulated a total of 27 medals through the day. Margret Montag and Lily Sher each earned four gold medals for their day's efforts.
(Matt Frye coming into the 5K finish)
On the men's side, Matt Frye (20 – 34) earned two golds and two silvers while team mate Cody Sears (20 – 34) earned two golds and one silver.
Kegan Kleeschulte won the 100 meters overall in a fantastic time of 15.18 in an extremely fast foursome. It has been nearly a decade since anyone has run the 100 meters in under 16 seconds. The track conditions at the soccer field this year were extremely fast with a nice solid base of packed snow and sunbaked ice.
This year's ESG's attracted a pair of runners from Brazil, who identified the day's racing while doing a web search of things to do while traveling in the US. Pericles Pretto and Andressa Biscardo both ran on snowshoes for their very first time, and enjoyed their 5K experience, while also leaving with medals for their efforts and photos with our Paul Smith's College students.
