The Paul Smith's College Hockey Team finally got a win at home over their archrival, SUNY Canton, in front of 200+ cheering fans. The Saranac Lake Civic Center reverberated noise throughout the night as the two teams were never more than 2 goals apart.
SUNY Canton struck first in the opening frame but then got into penalty trouble, a trend that would continue throughout the game. Kyle Bond (Raymondville, NY) converted on a pass setup by Gabe Smith (Queensbury, NY) and Cody Liguori (Rutland, VT) to make it 1-1 5 minutes into the first period. After giving up another fluky goal, Bond converted again on special teams, this time short-handed with a nice read and pass play that was setup by Ryan Savage (Tupper Lake, NY). The score after the first was 2-2.
The Bobcats won the second period in the +/- column due to more stellar special teams play, converting 75% of their power plays in the middle frame. Cody Liguori notched his first of the night, with assists going to Bond and Tom Cook (Becket, MA). Gabe Smith then got on the board, rifling a shot past the SUNY Canton netminder . Assiting on the goal were Liguori and Bond. Liguori would get his second of the night while shorthanded, setup nicely by Bond. Josh Campbell (Queensbury, NY) put the Bobcats up 6-4 23 seconds later with a power play goal of his own. Gibson Gilmore (Ithaca, NY) and Cook both assisted on the play. SUNY Canton got a quick one back which made it 6-5 going into the final period.
The third and final frame saw both teams play staunch defense. Goals were few and far between, as Cody Liguori completed his hat trick only 36 seconds in, again on the power play, with assists going to Bond and Smith. That was all the Bobcats would need, as freshman netminder Jacob Schmidt (Orchard Park, NY) played a superb third period, stopping all but one shot en route to a 7-6 victory.
The Liguori-Smith-Bond line ended up with an impressive 14 points between them. Equally as impressive was the Bobcats power play, which executed on 5/12 attempts, an unbelievable 42% conversion rate. Next up for the Paul Smith's College Hockey Men's Team, who sit at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in their division, is Tier-1 team Union College. They play Sunday, November 3rd at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in the Lake Placid Olympic Center at 4pm. Admission to that game will be free of charge.
