Paul Smith's Bowling Preview
Bowling looks to continue a Bright future and YSCC Dominance
After another successful YSCC conference championship, the Paul Smith bowling team is primed at another run at the YSCC title this year. The Bobcats look to replace 5 seniors to due to graduation including Taylor West who is arguably one of the best bowlers in school history. After asking head coach Phillip Muha about replacing Taylor he said "It's going to be a challenge to replace him. But life goes on." The Bobcats will look to new incoming players, and an already well-established and experienced team to take conference once again.
New this year is the creation of separate teams; the Bobcats will no longer compete co-ed but plan on having a separate women's and men's team to compete in tournaments outside the YSCC. Muha commented, "It will be a new experience for us, we have also struggled in the past with recruiting women's bowlers. To have 5 plus women on the team it's going to be interesting experience because it's never happened for us."
Key returners on the women's team include 2018 YSCC Women's Champion Senior Kalei Fenn who is expected to lead the women's team in her final season with the Bobcats, while Junior Jessica Korkemaz who enters as the runner up to Kalei in the YSCC Singles Championship looks to add experience to a relatively young and new women's team. While key new comers include transfer from local North Country Community College Abby Cowen and Freshman Kaylona Clark & Lindsey March look to have a successful first season with the Cats. When asking Fenn said this is a close group of people, we should be successful this year.
On the men's side returns a well experienced squad as 2018 YSCC Men's Champion Benjamin McInerney as well as varsity starters Nicholas Ferrara who was the YSCC Men's runner up last year. Jon Herrman and Matthew Jerome are also experienced returners. New recruits include Junior Transfer Connor Bean who arrives from Franklin Pierce University (bio) after they disbanded the men's and women's bowing teams. Bean brings a lot of college bowling experience to the team, riding a successful 2018 season where he captured his first college title last year with at the 2018 Mid-Hudson Conference Soffolk Tournament. New incoming Freshman Liam Briggs and Lucas Machowski are expected to have a solid season with the bobcats.
With a solid core filled with experience and talented new incoming players the Bobcats expect to have a great season outside the YSCC. Muha said this about the upcoming season "We should be able to win again with the squad we have." Bowling opens the season on the 20th of October as they host the 1st Inaugural Paul Smith's College Scrimmage against Vermont Tech, Fulton Montgomery CC, and Castleton University at Saranac Lake Lanes.
