Bobcat Spotlight: Coach Baylee Annis
Getting to know Women's Rugby Assistant Coach Baylee Annis
September 23, 2016
This week in the Bobcat Spotlight, we had a chance to get to know Assistant Women's Rugby Coach Baylee Annis.
Why did you decide to become a coach?
I decided to start coaching somewhat reluctantly at first, as I am still actively playing rugby and the shift from player to coach is never an easy one. After starting practices, I immediately gained a respect for the athletes who decided to try the sport for the first time, and became encouraged by their enthusiasm, talent, and competitiveness.
What do you enjoy most about coaching?
The moment an athlete realizes how strong they truly are.
What is your coaching style or philosophy?
My coaching philosophy is to give my players every tool possible and let them choose which ones to use during game time.
Who is your favorite coach and why?
My favorite coach is Joya Clark, a close friend and teammate from Norwich University. She led the Norwich Men's backs and sevens team as a 22-year old woman, and can still juke most of them on the field if she needs to. She's setting a new standard for young coaches.
What was your favorite moment in your athletic career?
Favorite athletic moment was playing for the USA in the scrum against the most-capped English player.
Did you participate in your sport in high school and college (if so, where)?
I played for the Adirondack Girls' High School team, and then for Norwich University in Vermont.
What other sports or activities do you enjoy playing or practicing?
I'm pretty competitive and will play ping pong for hours, but also enjoy a good hike and paddle.
What is your favorite sports related movie?
Goon is my favorite sports-related movie.
What's your mantra or favorite saying (in the context of sport and/ or life)?
Good people make a great team.
What team do you root for most enthusiastically? (any sport professional or college)
I'm not a very good sports fan, any underdog is the team I'll cheer for.
